What Is The Sacral Chakra?
The Sacral Chakra is the second of the seven main chakras in your body. It governs your creativity, emotions, self-worth, passions and sexuality. Certain yoga poses can help stimulate the sacral chakra such as the Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana), Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana) and the Bow Pose Dhanurasana). The sacral chakra is located in the lower abdomen just below the naval. In Sanskrit, the word for Sacral Chakra is Svadhishthana which is translated to "Self" and "Seat".
The Sacral Chakra is represented by an orange lotus flower with six petals. Each petal symbolizes different aspects of our emotions. This includes harmony, love, trustworthiness, desires, kindness and clarity. When the sacral chakra is balanced we can emotionally embrace these positive qualities in our life.
When this chakra is free and balanced it enables you to form meaningful and genuine relationships with the people around you. This is why when the Sacral Chakra gets blocked, it can lead to feelings of emotional detachment, suppressed creativity, and intimacy issues. Such imbalances can result in mood swings, lack of enthusiasm, and difficulties in expressing emotions. A blocked Sacral Chakra can even manifest in reproductive issues and physical discomfort in the lower back, kidney weakness and reproductive issues.
When you struggle to make enough time for your creativity to flourish and become stagnant, or experience emotional trauma and suppression, the sacral chakra can become unbalanced and blocked. This can happen during pivotal moments in your life such as facing challenges in personal relationships, or career. It can even be affected by societal pressures that cause you to be self conscious about your body image.
Creative activities such as painting or dancing can help to balance your sacral chakra as they create a connection to your emotions and inner creativity. Also, meditations where you visualize flowing water or an orange glowing orb can also help. Certain yoga poses that target the pelvic region, aromatherapy with scents such ylang-ylang or sandalwood and crystals such as carnelian and orange calcite have all been known to help balance this chakra.
